Steinwelten (Stone Worlds)
The Stone Worlds at the Bavarian Forest Granite Center in Hauzenberg opened in 2006. Visitors are fascinated by the monumental architecture, the exciting exhibitions, and the interesting stories surrounding granite.
The Cold Blood of the Earth
Children and adults, experts and laypeople alike, are fascinated by the stories surrounding granite, the “cold blood of the earth”. The center is located in a former quarry, which, together with a small lake, forms a magnificent backdrop for the unique architecture and the themes and content exhibited in the building and the historic quarry.
A special experience is the “Granitweihnacht” (Granite Christmas), which takes place every year in the run-up to Christmas on the Stone Worlds grounds.
Tour of the Stone Worlds
The tour of the Bavarian Forest Granite Center begins in the Granite Cinema. There, a 15-minute film shows how granite was formed in the Earth’s interior eons ago.
Then, the tour continues into the time of humans – from the Stone Age to modern industry.
After the cinema, visitors take an elevator into the earth’s interior. They enter a dark rock cave, fascinating with its glittering and colorful world of minerals. Leaving the cave, they return to daylight, where the history of granite mining and processing is presented in an entertaining way.
In the light-filled exhibition room, the reflections of the water’s surface play on the quarry lake. Beyond the water, there is a magnificent view of the quarry face and the demonstration quarry. The tour finally leads visitors outside. Between old jib cranes, trolley tracks, and stonemasons’ huts, they learn about the granite’s journey from the quarry face to the finished product. An old stonemasons’ canteen invites visitors to a well-deserved rest and snack.

The Stone Worlds are definitely worth a visit. Here, modern, impressive architecture, the historic flair, and the breathtaking backdrop of an old quarry combine to create an unforgettable experience.
